Overview of Health Informatics

Health Informatics is an evolving scientific discipline that deals with the collection, storage, retrieval communication and optimal use of health related data, information and knowledge. It utilizes the methods and technologies of the information, social and technology sciences for the purposes of problem solving and decision-making, thus assuming quality healthcare in all basic and applied areas of medical, biomedical and health sciences.

The opportunity to provide enhanced patient care or superior research, using aggregated data records and networking technology is very enticing. The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in healthcare converted patient as a data source, digitizing all the data related to the patient, often several locations and stored in local information systems. Virtual integration of these distributed patient data promises to develop a real time computerized algorithms that help physicians with decision-making tasks in their clinical practice known as Clinical (or diagnostic) Decision Support Systems (CDSS). This CDSS resulted from virtual patient record now shifted the practice of Evidence Based Medicine and Personalized Based medicine to development of Dynamic patients simulations and Virtual University etc. So after many years of development of information systems to support the infrastructure of medicine, a new generation of systems and tools are aimed at physicians and other health care managers and professionals to support education, decision-making, communication and many other aspects of professional activity.
