Sub-DIC Project / BIC

Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences located in rural setting within 5 minutes walking distance from Gandhi Ashram, is the First Rural Medical Institute in India established in 1969 as Gandhi Centenary Project under the dynamic leadership of (Late) Dr. Sushila Nayar.
.
The Department of Biochemistry whose sole piece of equipment was a small colorimeter way back in 1969 was nurtured over the past four decades by its dedicated team of staff and postgraduate students to its present level of sophistication.
DBT Sub-DIC Project / Bioinformatics Centre at MGIMS was established in March 1999 with support from DBT, MoS&T, Govt of India as a part of National BTISnet Programme. The Centre has thrust on Medical Informatics.

Sevamed - a Quarterly Update on Infectious Disease Research and Lifestyle Diseases has entered 18th year of its publication, is now transformed to e-Sevamed - a DBT Sub-DIC Publication.

The first issue of Sevamed was published in April, 2000 by Bioinformatics Centre, JB Tropical Disease Research Centre, MGIMS with financial support from Department of Biotechnology, Government of India for updating medical teachers, students and practitioners. We are very grateful to our founder Director Dr. Sushila Nayar for her encouragement and support at that time.  We are also grateful to our dynamic President Shri. Dhiru S. Mehta for continued support and strengthening the Bioinformatics Centre all these years. In those days internet was not so familiar and it was difficult to getcontinued internet connectivity, in small towns in particular. Our aim was to update medical teachers, students and practitioners by providing Sevamed in their hand which contains selected references and abstracts of recent research work on infectious diseases. Now the time has changed. Now a days internet is easily accessible and it has become a part of our lives. Hence we felt to transform Sevamed to e-Sevamed with inputs on recent advances on Bioinformatics, Next Generation Sequencing, Drug Designing etc.
